How Brushing and Flossing Can Help Prevent Gum Disease

Cavities are extremely common, affecting over half of teenagers and many adults in the United States at some point. A cavity is a permanently damaged area in the hard surface of a tooth that can be caused by a range of factors. While you can’t change your genetics, which can play a role in how many cavities you develop, you can shift your lifestyle and hygiene habits to lower your risk. 

At Comfort Dental Spa, our expert team provides professional cleanings and at-home tips and tricks to prevent cavities. Along with coming into the office for your bi-annual cleaning and oral cancer screenings, we recommend you take the following preventative measures. 

Brush your teeth properly

Brushing your teeth regularly helps do away with food particles and harmful bacteria that can contribute to cavities. Aim to brush your teeth twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush you haven’t used for longer than 3-4 months. Alternatively, you can use an electric toothbrush. Hold your toothbrush at a 45° angle to your gums, then gently move it back and forth using short strokes on all exposed sides of your teeth. 

Floss well daily 

Flossing can seem like a bit of a chore, but it’s very important for staving off cavities and decay. And once you get the flossing technique down, it should go fairly quickly and may even seem like a breeze. Hold the floss tightly between two fingers then guide the string between your teeth, applying a gentle rubbing motion. Once it reaches your gums, curve the floss into a C shape, curving it against one tooth. Repeat the process on the adjacent tooth, then throughout your mouth. 

Eat a healthy diet

Your diet can play an important role in whether or not you develop cavities, too. To take better care of your oral hygiene and enhance your overall wellness, eat primarily whole, nutritious foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins, like fish and poultry. When you eat foods that may fuel decay, such as candy, soft drinks, sugary baked goods, and potato chips, stick to moderate portions. 

See your dentist regularly

Even if you do a great job of caring for your teeth through brushing, flossing, and eating well, you should still schedule routine professional cleanings with us.
