Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

Approximately 7,900 people die from oral cancer each year. Research shows that use of tobacco products is the number one cause of oral cancer. The American Cancer Society recently released statistics stating that 90 percent of people with oral cancer used at least one form of tobacco. However, other risk factors for oral cancer include: heavy alcohol use, sun exposure, human papilloma virus (HPV), and untreated severe periodontal disease.

Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, this is a great time to schedule an oral cancer screening. Dentists often are the first healthcare providers to detect signs of oral cancer. Comfort Dental Spa, in Farmington Hills, MI, uses the VELscope® to detect precancerous and cancerous cells.

The screening process takes about two to three minutes. We’ll give you a pre-rinse solution to swirl around your mouth for approximately one minute. Next we’ll provide you with special eyewear and the lights will be dimmed. Then we’ll use the VELscope® light to look inside your mouth for signs of lesions and other indicators of oral cancer, which will appearance darker than healthy tissue.

If lesions are visible, Dr. Aziza Askari may suggest a biopsy to determine if you have oral cancer. The results of the biopsy set the next course of action. Early detection often results in a greater chance of recovery.

If you have not had an annual oral cancer screening contact Dr. Askari’s Farmington Hills dentist office at (248)566-6490 to schedule your appointment. We proudly care for residents of Farmington Hills, Livonia, Novi, and surrounding areas. Taking control of your oral health helps you take control of your overall health!
